Jackey is 58 years old and has been struggling to stay alive with dialysis. She became ill four years ago with an autoimmune disease that has attacked her kidneys. She has been dependent on dialysis for the past four years. She has been using home dialysis, but the procedure has been difficult for her and her family. She was approved for a kidney transplant, but her insurance will not cover the total cost of the procedure.
Not being able to obtain supplemental health insurance coverage because of a preexisting health condition has posed a hardship for Jackey and her family to pay for the costly kidney transplant.
Jackey was raised Clovis, CA. She is married and has 3 children and 5 grandchildren. Jackey was a hairstylist for many years and used to say she loved making others look beautiful on the outside as well as the inside. She always used to cheer people up and listen to them as she fixed their hair. She was told she could no longer fix hair after developing kidney disease because of the chemicals she used to style hair. It was heartbreaking for her. After she began dialysis, she spent most of her time on the machine and became ill at times. Jackey never gave up and used her skills as a hairstylist cheering other patients up at the dialysis clinic and helping them feel more beautiful on the inside. She used her time to outside the clinic to help her youngest daughter get through high school and graduate with honors. She received a full scholarship to NYU. She was the first person in Jackey’s family to attend college. Jackey would like to visit her while at school and attend her graduation. Having a kidney transplant would make it easier for Jackey to travel to NY. She also looks forward to the day her grandchildren attend college.
To help with the financial burden of Jackey’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law, are held by Help Hope Live in the Southwest Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant-related expenses only. Please consider a contribution.
