Kayla is praying for another miracle.

Kayla is a divorced, single mother of a wonderful 12 year old with learning disabilities.
While she worked for many years as a Daycare teacher, she is financially dependent upon Social Security Disability, Medicaid, and Medicare. On May 11, 2017, Kayla survived a Code Blue and after some complications went on to spend several months at the University of Maryland’s Shock Trauma Unit in Baltimore. This has been a very difficult time for Kayla and her family; especially her son. She was recently placed on the Adult Small Bowel Transplant List at Georgetown University Medical Center. One of 4 such facilities in the United States. She suffers from short gut syndrome. Georgetown only performs 10 such adult transplants per year. However, finding her a good match may take some time, due to her extremely high antigen levels.

When I visited Kayla today, she waiting for a room on the transplant floor and repeated over and over that she was worried about infection and rejection. At about that time, the occupational and physical therapist came into her room. She was able to sit up and actually stood up for a minute or two. She also repeated her concern about rejection an infection to them. So, on her board, they wrote no infection and no rejection. Before I left, we made up a song called No infection and no rejection. She’s really quite funny because the drugs are making her sound like she’s tipsy. But I am so impressed with how far she’s come and the wonderful care she has gotten on the surgical ICU.

They removed Kayla’s breathing tube today and when I arrived she was somewhat alert. The nurses had been trying to get her to use words but weren’t having much luck. Of course I know how to get her goat, so after I nagged her she said Mommy stop! She would verbalize yes or no to the nurses questions But the best part was when she stated I got to pee! So I knew it was safe to go home get some rest and visit her tomorrow.

I only wish that housebreaking her puppy was going as well. But the only progress has been with him learning the words NO and OFF!
