Kayla is praying for another miracle.

Kayla is a divorced, single mother of a wonderful 12 year old with learning disabilities.
While she worked for many years as a Daycare teacher, she is financially dependent upon Social Security Disability, Medicaid, and Medicare. On May 11, 2017, Kayla survived a Code Blue and after some complications went on to spend several months at the University of Maryland’s Shock Trauma Unit in Baltimore. This has been a very difficult time for Kayla and her family; especially her son. She was recently placed on the Adult Small Bowel Transplant List at Georgetown University Medical Center. One of 4 such facilities in the United States. She suffers from short gut syndrome. Georgetown only performs 10 such adult transplants per year. However, finding her a good match may take some time, due to her extremely high antigen levels.

Katie is back in the SICU and has been there for a while now. They keep intubating her and then remove the tube only to have to put it back. They are now considering a tracheotomy. The team makes sure that she is resting comfortably while they try to determine what’s happening.

On Thursday they did a biopsy to determine if the donated organ is rejecting her instead of the other way around. While the team feels this is not likely they want to ensure that all possibilities are explored. That’s all for now…barb

Kayla is finally showing a slight improvement with her graft. However, her cognition leaves a great deal to be desired. She’s having difficulty speaking though she will follow directions. The doctors say this is due to continuing rejection and her body fighting off infection. As these conditions improve, so should her cognition. Today is her 105th day in the hospital with more to come followed by a stay in a rehabilitation facility.
