From his wife:
My husband Matt really needs your help.
Matt found out he had PKD (polycystic kidney disease) when he was 10 years old. He grew up knowing one day he’d need a transplant not just because of his diagnosis, but because he watched his father deal with his own two transplants and the finances that came from his fathers trips to the hospital.
Matt lost both of his kidneys in March 2019, but even though he was dealing with the worst time of his life, he never lost his positive personality or his fun sense of humor. Matt doesn’t meet strangers, anywhere he goes he can find someone to talk to as if he has known them for years.
That has continued whether it be at a doctors appointment or a trip to dialysis.
Matt has been blessed to find out that he’s getting a kidney from someone who believes whole-heartedly that they’ve been holding onto his kidney their whole life.
While this news is the best news he has ever gotten, financially it’s not. He has insurance, but it doesn’t cover everything. Expenses such as bills, anti-rejection medication that he has to take the rest of his life, and traveling expenses since his appointments are three hours away from his home.
Any donations to Help Hope Live will help ease the financial burden of a transplant and will allow Matt to focus on a healthy recovery and a long and happy life with his wife and two dogs.
From his Mom:
Matthew was in the 5th grade when he was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney disease. He was tested because his dad and grandmother had it and the school nurse caught his high blood pressure. Matthew has been on high blood pressure medication every since. A 5th grader should not need medication for high blood pressure.
Matt watched everything his dad and uncle had to go through to be able to not have to be on dialysis. His dad had two transplants, his uncle one.
Matt’s dad had to have his kidney’s remove, they were 7lbs each. Matt also had his kidneys removed, they were hemorrhaging. When they were removed his kidneys were 9 and 11lbs. The average weigh of an adult kidney 150-160 grams.
Matt was started on Hemo dialysis at 31. He is an active man, giving 100% to everything, but because of the effect of the dialysis he had to quit his job. An the wait time for disability is six months. As you can tell, this is a huge financial hardship, for Matthew and his family.
But Matt found a donor – a very kind stranger – and received his kidney in June (postponed from April because of COVID 19). He is recuperating well, but under very strict quarantine.
Matt needs your help. He has cost that are not covered by his insurance, including anti-rejection medications that he will need for the rest of his life.
We are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live in Matt’s honor to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with transplantation.
