I’ve kind of waffled back and forth on whether to upload any pictures of the less than positive variety. I know they are not the way I want anyone to think of me, least of all my grandchildren.
However, they can all see my fundraisers so that just might be a moot point. Maybe it’s pride that makes me want to keep the ugliness of this disease from them.
I am uploading one picture from a fall on August 6th. I’ve sent this to my kids and they may have shown my grandchildren.
I have good blood pressure. However, I’ve developed Orthostatic Hypotension… that means my blood pressure drops markedly when I stand up. In addition my disease makes my oxygen saturation too low at times. If I stand and my bp drops at the same time as my oxygen saturation drops the result is a blackout. It literally is like turning a light switch off. Between my bp and my O2 saturation my brain isn’t getting enough oxygen so it shuts off. One minute I’m standing and the next my wife is picking me up off the floor. This picture is from my last blackout 8/6/20
Uploaded a picture of my kids (all adults at this point) and their kids at Christmas time 2018
I uploaded a couple of pictures from my Birthday last year. We went to Grandfather mountain here in North Carolina over by Banner Elk, NC. That was when I could get around without oxygen. The first picture was just a couple of months ago. Fifty pounds lighter and need to be on oxygen just about 24/7. Now that trip would be an impossibility as walking fifty feet is a chore. This disease is so debilitating it’s incomprehensible. I can’t even help with a little yard work, my poor wife has to do it all.
I am in the pre-transplant evaluation stage of pursuing a lung transplant. The copays and deductibles even for the intensive five day evaluation are significant. I was forced to retire early because of my disease so our only source of income is social security.
I do want you to know that I contracted this disease through no fault of my own. I never smoked or even tried to smoke anything in my life. The disease is called Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). The idiopathic part means of no known origin which means the doctors cannot determine how I contracted the disease. Pulmonary Fibrosis means scarred lungs. IPF is a terminal condition and there is no cure for IPF so the only chance for someone in the advanced stages is lung transplant.
I will update as I take this daunting journey and let you know any progress I may find. Without the generosity of those willing to donate I could not afford to pursue the one and only way of fighting this horrific disease.
Thank you for helping whether through donations or prayers! I appreciate your help!
