Viri’s kidneys stopped growing when she was around 20 years (estimated) old. This caused a lot of complications as her body grew, as it’s ability to detoxify her system decreased over time until she was practically bedridden by the time she was 15 years old , she was hospitalized with the diagnosis being end stage renal failure. Her kidneys gave up.
Through hemo dialysis, which involves 4 hr visits, 3 times a week, where she has needles stuck into the fistula she has in her left arm, and a machine, miraculously, filters her blood and extracts the extra water that her body has accumulated since the last treatment, as Kidney Disease sufferers are not able to urinate after complete kidney shutdown, thereby retaining all the liquid they consume that is not lost due to evaporation through breathing.
There are many other complications. Constant “dry weight” fluctuations, horrific nausea, vomiting pretty much on a daily basis, blood pressure fluctuations with dangerous highs and lows during them (dialysis is very hard on the heart because of this). I believe it’s even harder on the heart emotionally. At least it is, for me, to witness it first hand as her husband.
There are many of you who know her. To those who don’t, to know her, is to love her. She is literally, the most selfLESS person I have ever met. Her capacity for love, for all things beautifully human and beautiful in nature, never ceases to amaze me.
Despite her condition and her personal torment, she CONSTANTLY thinks of others. She is “Aunt Viri” or “Tia” to every child our relatives and friends have. Children LOVE her!! I love her in ways that I never thought possible. To the extent that I would give my own life to give her one of her own, so that she could maybe experience life as all of us who’s bodies have “normal” functioning capacity, take for granted on a daily basis with absolutely no clue how lucky we are to have it.
She can’t travel like we do. She can’t eat like we do. She can’t drink like we do. Her fistula restricts her from really exercising, sleeping on her left side, and wearing anything that potentially exposes it to public view. And as each day passes, the struggle becomes worse for her.
For 19 years she has been doing dialysis. She is 34 now, 15 when diagnosed. Complications since 11-12. Virtually no teenage life at all, and not much more as she aged.. Not of really experiencing the magic of that time and socializing with friends. It’s been 2o years so far up and downs .
I would like to donate a kidney to her. I would like to give her the opportunity to LIVE. With some hope, and optimism. To experience life as the majority of us get to experience it on a daily basis, and so often take for granted.
Please help us make some sense of “normal”- a new experience for her.
