Maria’s busy life of work, family, and sports came to a halt when she was diagnosed with cirrhosis in January of 2014. Things took a turn for the worse in May of 2015 when the doctors told Maria that she needs a liver transplant. As she waits for a donor, the medical bills are escalating.
When Maria is not taking time off for treatments and recovery, she continues to work at a physical therapy office as a friendly receptionist. Her real passion is supporting her two children, Michael (18) and Elsie (16), who are both All-Stars in their field of sports. Traveling and being her children’s number #1 fan is the main reason Maria is staying strong to continue her journey of getting well!
Maria’s husband, William, is supporting their son who is in college, their daughter, and his wife’s condition. Even with all his hard work, funding this life saving surgery is a monumental task and one that the Rivera family cannot face alone. Even with insurance, there are many out-of-pocket transplant related expenses including temporary relocation costs since Maria and a caregiver will have to relocate for four months to be closer to UF Health Hospital in Gainesville, co-pays and deductibles, doctor visits, travel for testing, and the costly immunosuppressant medications that Maria will have to take for the rest of her life. This is where we need your help!
To help with the financial burden of Maria’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southeast Liver Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Please consider making a contribution.
Thank you for the love, support, and prayers. The gratitude Maria and her family have are beyond words. Keep checking this campaign page as we will be posting updates and information on fundraising events. Together we can help Maria fight and win this battle. #MariaRstrong

It has been almost 4 months that Maria had her Liver Transplant surgery. The first month her body was acting a little strange and kidney's didn't want to work well, but that is normal due to the side effects of medications and also her body getting used to a new organ. She also lost her health insurance from her previous job but thanks to God her husband was able to add her to his insurance policy. It has a higher deductibles and more money is taken out of his paycheck, but we are glad his job was able to add her to his insurance. She is at her Venice, FL home with her family recuperating day by day. Sometimes she feels very tired and her body hurts but she is a very strong women and with the support and prayers from her family and friends she will continue with her recovery each and everyday. On October 20, 2016 she will be going back to Gainesville, FL to the Shands Hospital, she will have a biopsy done. Thanks to everyone that continues to prayed for her and family and for the amazing support. Words cannot described how much we appreciated everyone. Love you all, God bless. #MariaRstrong
It has been 3 weeks that Maria had her Liver Transplant, so far her liver is functioning very well. She is continuing to recover slowly but steady. So far the only problem she is having right now is that she is retaining lots of fluids. Doctors are changing her medications to balance her liver, kidney and other organs, and soon they will find out what is causing her to retain fluids. Please everyone continued praying for her and the family. Thanks for all of your suport. #MariaRstrong
Wanted to keep everyone updated. We never thought we will received the call we have been waiting for. On June 15, 2016 like around 9:30pm Maria gets the call from the hospital, telling her a Liver is available for her. We couldn't believe it we have only been waiting for about a year but it felt like an eternity. Her husband William, my niece Elsie and Maria drove that night to Gainesville, FL since she had to be at the hospital at 7:00am, that night we couldn't sleep. On June 16,2016 Maria arrive to the hospital early morning, hospital nurses, doctors started getting her prepared for her transplant. Like around 9:30pm Maria was taken to her surgery room so that doctors could perform the Liver Transplant. It was hours and hours of waiting, surgery took around 5 hours, we had lots of people praying everywhere. We had Faith that God was with her all the time. Transplant was done with no complications. As of now Maria is still at the hospital recovering and she is doing great. We will still have fundraisers since we have not been able to reach our goal. Want to thank everyone for prayers and support and to please continue praying for Maria and family. GOD bless everyone. #MariaRstrong
