My name is Scarlett Chandler, and I am 32 years old. I was born with a neural tube defect, more commonly known as Spina Bifida. As a result of my condition, I have been in a wheelchair my whole life. My mother has always been my greatest supporter, teaching me to be as independent as possible, including getting our master bathroom renovated so I could start taking care of my personal needs, and renovating our kitchen so that I could start learning how to cook for myself. She has always instilled in me the knowledge that I was much more than just a young woman in a wheelchair. She taught me that despite all of the things I’d been through, that I was created and left on this earth for a plan and purpose.

In 2006, I worked very hard to obtain my GED, and then began taking classes at a local community college. I volunteer at the local elementary school, and enjoy attending many activities in the community. I attend numerous medical appointments, rehab and physical therapy as a result of my condition. Despite my desire for independence, I must be transported by a handicapped accessible vehicle and rely on my mother to drive me everywhere I need to go. This makes most activities both limiting and difficult. I am writing this letter, because as I continue to live my life and grow out of my twenties, my goal is to purchase a new van with hand controls, so that I may start learning to drive independently. A new van will enable me to attend medical appointments, enjoy the many activities I love, as well as gain independence for both myself and my mother.

Hi, I just wanted to take a minute to say thank you to everyone who has supported me along my journey towards a greater level of independence. I am overwhelmed by the generosity everyone has shown. I would like to invite you to my next amazing fundraisers. The first fundraiser I have going is a Yankee Candle fundraiser, I am extremely excited about this one, because they have some amazing products for you to choose from. I also have a Dine and donate fundraiser scheduled for October 2nd, this one will go from 11am to 9pm, and I will receive 25% of the proceeds from anyone who comes in with the flyer. The third one I have is that I am selling Belk Charity Day Sale tickets again. If you live anywhere near a Belk department store, and would like tickets, please pm me at [email protected], the tickets are 5 dollars each, and I get 100% of the proceeds from the ticket sales.

I would like to take a minute to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated during my December Giving Challenge. I was overwhelmed by the generosity everyone showed me. I would also like to take a minute to tell everyone about my next awesome fundraiser. On Monday, March 13th, a local restaurant has stepped up to do a Dine and Donate fundraiser for me. For everyone that comes in and says they are there to support me, the restaraunt will donate 10% of all proceeds from that night back to me.
