Rick Snyder Needs an Accessible Van

ARLINGTON, Texas—On the global giving day GivingTuesday this Tuesday, November 30, the Arlington community has a chance to change a local life. Rick Snyder has been living with quadriplegia since age 26. He has partnered with the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fundraise for the cost of an accessible van. On November 30, the nonprofit will waive all credit card fees on donations in Rick’s honor.

At 26, a car accident almost took Rick’s life, leaving him a C6-C7 quadriplegic with no movement from the chest down and limited movement in his hands. Thanks to his friends, family, and his partner, Victoria, “I have learned to adapt and accommodate many of the obstacles in my life,” said Rick.

Rick lives on just $502 per month in state-based benefits, an amount which must cover all of his bills, groceries, and expenses. His biggest barrier to an independent life is the exceptionally high cost of a wheelchair accessible van. Rick’s insurance has refused to assist with the cost.

A van will allow Rick to pursue employment to supplement his income and easily access medical appointments, grocery shopping, outings with family members and friends, and weekly church services. Rick has already passed his driving test—a rigorous process for quadriplegics, involving three days of six-hour-long driving sessions with hand steering controls.

Bring the dream of an accessible van within reach for Rick by making a donation at Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law, and all funds raised will be managed by the nonprofit to cover verified medical and related expenses. Help Hope Live verifies medical and financial need for every patient.

On GivingTuesday on November 30, the nonprofit will waive the credit card fee for all online donations in Rick’s honor. Since 2012, GivingTuesday has provided an opportunity for people around the world to offset the heavy spending of Black Friday and Cyber Monday with charitable contributions and support.

Help Hope Live is a national nonprofit that specializes in engaging communities in secure, tax-deductible fundraising campaigns for people who need a transplant or are affected by a catastrophic injury or illness. Since 1983, campaigns organized by Help Hope Live have raised over $158 million to pay patient expenses. ###
