Family and friends of Adam Smith are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with transplantation.

Adam has chosen to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors. Contributors can be sure donations will be used to pay or reimburse medical and related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the Give button.

Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. It is a great comfort. Thank you all for the shares as well.

I wanted to give an update on my illness. I'm still waiting for a kidney. In the meantime, I'm on peritoneal dialysis at night. This is only temporary because the end goal is a transplant.

I have IgA nephropathy, which is an autoimmune kidney disease. This means that his body's immune system is attacking the tissues of the kidney. I was diagnosed in 2018 at age 38 with stage 2 kidney failure. I'm now age 45 years old and at stage 5 kidney failure. I asked family members and friends to donate. We had a match, but they were not able to donate due to their health issues.

I like to see my two young boys ages 7 and 9 grow up. Our sons are homeschooled and attend scouts and church school.

The waitlist for a kidney is up to six years and the life expectancy of a person on dialysis is only 5 to 10 years.

Please consider becoming a donor. I know living donation may not be right for everyone — but you can still help! Consider being an organ donor after death or at the very least help me by sharing our story with everyone you know to bring awareness to kidney disease and living donation. Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story. If donating a kidney to me is something you would like to consider, please contact UMPC Kidney Transplant call 855-545-2732
