Help Hope Live for Bariyah Gilmer

My name is Bariyah Gilmer. Most know me as Bree. I was born with Larsen’s Syndrome. Before the exasperation of my disability, I was leading an independent life. At birth my parents told me I received multiple surgeries on my clubbed feet and dislocated knees. Once I was able to walk, I was unstoppable. I was able to live my life along side my younger sister who does not have a disability. Whatever she did I was able to do as well. But when I began puberty, something began to change. I started having weakness in my hands. Then, leg weakness. Soon after I was unable to stand by myself. I was taken to the ER and was told I needed surgery right away or I would be paralyzed from the neck down. The bones in my spine were crushing my spinal cord. It was scary but I just wanted to get this over and return to my normal life. I had a cervical, (neck), fusion. I am unable to turn my head side to side. My recovery was long. I was glad to start therapies. I finished High School at home. I was able to attend FIU on campus by using a scooter to get around. I would like to regain my independence by purchasing a handicapped accessible vehicle. I will be able to get myself to doctors’ appointments and social activities.

A surgery was done to remove and replace the bones. However, the damage to my nerves was irreversible. I have learned to live with my new normal for years now and I  have tried not to let my physical limitations keep me from accomplishing my dreams.
