Someone once described Lucy as human sunshine. What a fitting description for a person who brought smiles and laughter to all those lucky enough to have encountered her.

Lucy was born November 4, 1975, in Portland Oregon to Ian and Judi Barr. Originally from Australia, they had made Oregon their new home and Lucy was the first of the children born in the US. Her bright laugh and wide smile became apparent early in childhood. Progressing through elementary, middle, and high school, she developed a love for tennis, soccer, theater, singing, and of course, boys. She became quite the social butterfly while quietly excelling at school. When mom thought she was opening the sliding door for fresh Oregon air, she was actually sneaking off to late night parties! She was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Oregon and became a proud Duck. Soon, she became a sister at Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Lucy joined in the college fun and while she was humble about her classroom accomplishments, she couldn’t keep them quiet for long, as she was recognized for the highest GPA in the Greek (sorority and fraternity) system.

Lucy followed her father, Dr. Ian Barr, into medicine. She earned her MD from Oregon Health & Science University. While in her final year, she did a rotation in Nepal and learned the head bobble. Little did she know how handy it would come in later. Of course, as Lucy was prone to do, she took a side trip to Mount Everest. She befriended and did shots with Jamling Norgay (son of Tenzing) and Peter Hilary (son of Sir Edmund) on the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Everest. She then rambled around the Khumbu icefall for some excitement. Fortunately, she managed to rapidly trek via the Annapurna circuit and catch her flight back to the US in time for her medical school graduation.

She joined the general surgery department at OHSU to start her post graduate training. In typical Lucy fashion, she ran the Portland marathon following an overnight call during her internship because there is always time to do something exciting. During her general surgery training, she did a rotation on the Head and Neck Surgery service and was bitten by the ENT bug. She found a position in the ENT residency in Salt Lake City and soon moved to Utah. Lucy continued her Lucy ways in Salt Lake City and rapidly developed a wide cadre of friends. She had a way of managing lots of laughs, parties, and dates while diligently developing her surgical skills. She followed residency with a fellowship in facial plastic surgery and returned to Salt Lake City as the first board certified woman in facial plastic surgery in the state of Utah. Lucy opened her own small business, Barr Aesthetics, and cultivated her fabulous team into a successful facial plastics practice.

Along the way, she fell in love with Pramod Sharma. Who would have ever thought the fun girl from Oregon of Australian descent would fall for the nerdy New Yorker of Indian heritage!? That head bobble became indispensable! Lucy and Pramod were married among the red rocks of southern Utah. Surrounded by friends and family all dancing under the desert sun, Pramod arrived on a white horse to start the festivities. The following night after 2 lively days of fun, Lucy and Pramod left together on the same horse to close the wedding and start their amazing life together. Their friends describe their relationship as a beautiful love story, one that only grew stronger with time.  With this blossoming relationship came some early lessons in what it meant to be a parent. She quickly proved her skills as a caretaker and a source of unconditional love as she helped raise Jyoti and Ravi.  Soon, Akasha and Deven were born and joined in the fun.  Lucy showed deep selfless love and cherished being a mom. Incredible how even more colorful life became with this gang of kids.

Together, the Sharma clan of Pramod, Lucy, Jyoti, Ravi, Akasha, and Deven were launching into adventures around the world. They developed a love for skiing, biking, running, hiking, tennis, a recent addition of surfing, trying new foods (but always returning to Porcupine Grill for their favorite nachos), and rushing out the door to appreciate a beautiful sunset.

Lucy had a profound connection to nature and soon the Sharma clan were off on outdoor escapades. From hiking up Mt St Helens with babies in backpacks to being led down double black runs at Snowbird by the same kids some years later! Lucy loved Oregon and it never left her. She developed a love for the Oregon coast during many trips throughout her life. Eventually, they found a perfect coastal cottage in the beautiful town of Yachats. It was her happy and peaceful place and will remain a sanctuary providing tranquility for the rest of us.

We adventured on bikes in Utah, Nevada, Colorado, California, Montana, Oregon, Italy (Tuscany and Dolomites), and Japan. We rode mountain bikes, gravel bikes, and road bikes. But most of all, Lucy loved to climb while riding. She was our billy goat. She ambled along on flats but just took off up the mountains. The steeper the climb the more strength she seemed to have.

Lucy finished early in the operating room on April 21, 2026. It was a beautiful spring day. In classic Lucy fashion, she decided to squeeze in a quick ride up Little Cottonwood Canyon between the surgery and picking up kids. This was her favorite climb she had done hundreds of times. On her way down, a deer jumped onto the road causing Lucy to swerve and avoid the deer but crash in that instant.

Lucy received amazing care at Intermountain Medical Center and Nielsen Rehabilitation Hospital and fought to recover with her typical resilience and intensity. Sadly, her injuries were just too severe, and she passed away August 28, 2026 held in Pramod’s arms and surrounded by family. Lucy gave life to multiple people by donating her beautiful and healthy organs.

Lucy leaves behind Pramod Sharma (husband), Jyoti Sharma (stepdaughter), Ravi Sharma (stepson), Akasha (daughter), Deven (son), Judi Barr (mother), Peter Barr (brother), Hayley (sister), Andrew (brother), Satya Sharma (father-in-law) and many, many more loving family members all around the country and world.

While we are devastated by the loss of an amazing person, we are buoyed by having encountered and loved Lucy. Our human sunshine warmed us deeply and thoroughly.

Her death has left a hole in our hearts yet simultaneously filled our souls with love.

Smile, laugh, and live brightly like Lucy.

They have been truly humbled by the outpouring of generosity and love from Lucy’s immediate and extended communities.
