About Monique

Monique Marie Buquet is a 35-year-old woman with special needs who enjoys living independently in her own home with the support of 24-hour care attendants. Her caregivers assist with daily activities, including personal care, meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication management, laundry, medical equipment support, and safe transfers in and out of her wheelchair.

Despite the challenges she faces, Monique finds joy in painting, playing with her dolls, and listening to music on Alexa through Spotify.

Medical Challenges

Monique has been diagnosed with:

• Spastic Cerebral Palsy

• Developmental Disability

• Neuromuscular Respiratory Weakness

• Sleep Apnea

• Epilepsy

• Hypoxia

Throughout her life, Monique has experienced mobility limitations due to Cerebral Palsy and has never been able to walk long distances. However, during the past two months, her condition has declined significantly.

Monique has suffered nine falls in just eight weeks and now struggles with basic movements, even with assistance. Daily activities such as getting out of bed, transferring to and from her recliner, using the bathroom, and getting in and out of her mother’s car have become increasingly difficult and unsafe.

A Significant Change in Mobility

Because of her declining mobility, Monique’s doctors have prescribed a specialized tilt wheelchair for full-time use. Her Cerebral Palsy has also contributed to Neuromuscular Respiratory Weakness, and she now depends on oxygen therapy 24 hours a day.

These changes have created new challenges for Monique and have made safe, reliable transportation more important than ever.

The Need for an Accessible Van

Today, Monique’s greatest need is a wheelchair-accessible van.

She attends four to five medical appointments each month, and her specialists are located approximately 35 minutes from her home. While transportation services are available, they often require waits of three to four hours. Unfortunately, the batteries for her portable oxygen concentrator do not last long enough to accommodate those extended waits, creating a significant barrier to receiving the medical care she needs.

A wheelchair-accessible van would provide Monique with safe and reliable transportation to medical appointments, community activities, and visits with family and friends. Access to dependable transportation would greatly improve her quality of life, independence, and ability to remain engaged in her community.

Home Accessibility Improvements

In addition to addressing her transportation needs, Monique’s parents are currently making modifications to her bathroom to improve accessibility and safety within her home.

These updates will help Monique maintain as much independence as possible while ensuring her daily care needs can be met safely.
