We have tried several therapies through the years to help him recover and a few years ago chose to pursue stem cell treatments. As a result Cooper has had improvements in the areas of vision, cognition, and range of motion. These are areas Cooper had been struggling to improve in for years, but with little success.
Following his first treatment, he was able to learn how to use his vision to communicate through an Eye-Gaze communication device. Following his second treatment, he began to take reciprocal steps while suspended over a treadmill. He worked up enough stamina to attend an intensive PT session every day for a month. At the end of the month he took 106 steps! This treatment made this possible and he continues to show signs of improvement!
Stem cell treatments are very costly and not covered by insurance. Since Cooper responded so well to stem cells his family continues to seek out this treatment. The Somerville family has partnered with HelpHOPELive, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that helps patients and families facing transplantation or catastrophic injury afford uninsured medically related expenses through grass-roots fundraising.
Our fundraising goal is $20,000 per year to get him this treatment once per year. Any help you can provide is GREATLY APPRECIATED by his family. We are so encouraged by his progress and would love to continue to be able to provide him these treatments!
More details on Cooper’s progress also available on Cooper’s website: www.CoopersStory.com and blog: www.reCOOPERate.blogspot.com.
