William grew up in central Pennsylvania, he attended Bible Truth Institute where he studied Divinity Studies and Theology, and he is also a Nationally Certified EMT. He enjoys serving both as a paid and a volunteer EMS provider in the local and surrounding communities. Over the past ten years William has had 7 major surgeries and another 8 minor procedures due to his battle with diabetes since the age of 12.
Six years ago he received a kidney transplant with his younger sister Laurie donating one of her kidneys for him. Almost a year later he received his first pancreas transplant and was well on his way to enjoying a healthy productive life, but in March of 2014 the pancreas failed and William once again found himself struggling day to day. This pancreas transplant is vital not only to the overall wellness for William but also to protect the transplanted kidney from damage associated with diabetes. William is confident that with your help and the continued love and support of his family and friends the pancreas transplant will be a success and he can soon return to serving others and looking forward to many more years of healthy living.
Transplants are life-saving but financially draining as expenses continue to compound while the patient is unable to work throughout the recovery process. Even with insurance William is facing many added expenses including a 160 mile one-way commute to the hospital for appointments, post transplant care and medications, co-pays, lab fees and much more.
To help with the financial burden of William’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in his honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted non-profit organization that has been providing community based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Mid-Atlantic Pancreas Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant related expenses only.
William has chosen to fundraise with HelpHOPELive in part because HelpHOPELive assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for donors. Donors can be sure that funds donated will be used only to pay or reimburse medically-related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the Donate Now button.
Thank you for your support!
Let me start by saying THANK YOU to all who have given to me, I can't tell you what a burden you have lifted from me with your continued generosity. At this point I am doing well and continuing through the proccess of preparing for transplant. Again THANK YOU for your continued support and prayers and hopefully things will start to move quickly and this situation will be resolved. your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated throughout this time of waiting and hopefully my next update will be good news.
Just wanted to give everyone a quick update. I am currently on the pancreas transplant list and looking forward to the surgery, this list is updated monthly and my lab work each month determines weather I am listed as active or in-active. Since the surgery will do damage to the transplanted kidney it is important that my kidney function or (GFR) # is at or above a certian level. Also the protocol for a pancreas only transplant is difficult for someone like me who has already had one pancreas transplant with a transplanted kidney. At this time the kidney is functioning very well and protecting it is a high priority. Again let me say thank you to all who have donated and for your thoughts and prayers, I am doing well and know that everything will happen in Gods perfect timing. Thanks again and i will keep you all updated better in the future.
I have finished all of my pre-op testing. My case will be presented to the transplant board on Monday November 24th. They will then make the decision to add me to the National Pancreas Transplant List. Getting listed is a big step in the process and one that has required alot of travel and time consuming appiontments. Thank-you to all of you who have helped throughout this process and I am excited to be one step closer to the surgery. After I am listed the call could come at any time and when it does I will have to drop everything and be 100% commited to the surgery and recovery which all included should take about 8 weeks from start to finish, 8 weeks sounds like a long time to me right now but in the long run it is a short time to give up to gain many years of healthy living. Thanks again to all of you for your support, without your help all of this would not be possible !!
I would like to give everyone a quick update. Last week I was in Pittsburgh for my pre-op transplant evaluation which went very well. As soon as I am able to complete some minor pre-op testing I will be able to be listed on the National Pancreas Transplant List and the surgery should take place within a few months of my name being placed on that list. I also would like to thank all of you for your prayers and support, all you do is greatly appreciated.
Bill - We have admired you over the last years, as you have faced each hurdle in getting healthy. Laurie has been keeping us up-to-date and am so glad you are on the transplant list. Know that you are in our prayers. Valerie and Keith
