Don Schroeder, loving husband, dad, son, and brother, was diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FCGS). What began as just a case of high blood pressure for Don, has turned into his need for a lifesaving kidney transplant. Don, who is the most generous person you’d hope to meet, needs our help, because the cost of a transplant is overwhelming.
Don grew up in Balko, Oklahoma. He went to college where he studied accounting and he has spent the last 26 years working as an accountant. He currently resides in Spearman, Texas with his wife Cayla. He has two sons, Blayne and Brock, both currently attending college at WTAMU.
Don’s journey began about 10 years ago. Over the last two years his disease has progressed and now he is beginning dialysis treatments at home- every single night. He is an avid golfer, loves yard work, and LOVES spending time and doing activities with his boys. Those same activities have become more and more difficult over these past two years. Don has had many living donor prospects but has yet to find the exact match yet. We continue our search.
Even though transplants are life-saving, they are financially draining. Even with insurance, Don’s family is facing very high expenses including relocation closer to the center during and after transplant, enormously expensive anti-rejection medications he will need to take for the rest of his life, traveling expenses, and more.
To help with the financial burden of Don’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in his honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the South-Central Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Please, consider a contribution.

Thank you for your prayers and love. Please know that Don and his family appreciate your support on their journey.
With sincere gratitude,

I could not even imagine what life would be like without His Grace and Mercy! We are truly so blessed by Amy and her obedience to follow Gods lead!
Great things in our future! Transplant time is near! AUGUST 24 has been scheduled! Please continue to say prayers for our family and the donors family! I will post on here as we move closer! More details as God continues to work!
Summer is in full force. We have had the pleasure of attending my nephews wedding this past weekend. It's quite an experience to travel these days but we are learning how to pack all the dialysis products. That is only the second overnight stay we have accomplished since beginning dialysis. It's always good to get away for a bit. Don is doing good. We do have exciting news as we have a potential donor going to Fort Worth for "the testing" phase. Prayers would be greatly appreciated as we begin this process again. A friend sent me this verse that I keep trying to remember.
"Wait for the Lord; be strong and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord! Psalm 27:14
Sometimes that is the hardest part: The Wait!
We have been praying for a lot of answers these days. Our boys are finishing up the year at WTAMU and about to be home for the summer. (Praise the Lord) Don is still doing great on dialysis. We are surviving the hiccups of the dreaded cycler. Sometimes wishing for more sleep than what we get, but thankful we are in our own bed at night and able to do these treatments at home. My school year also comes to a close and summer school begins soon. Looking forward to some hot weather, family time, and many blessings God has in store. Thanks for the continued prayers and support. We are blessed!
Our journey continues with not a lot of changes. Don is still doing dialysis every night. We have been on this treatment for almost 2 months. It can sure be draining. It is such a process to get ready for treatments each night, but we remain sooo thankful for being able to do them at home and without too many problems. We continue to pray for a donor and for a transplant soon. Thanks to everyone who follows our page and continues to pray for us. Please specifically pray that a transplant will happen in the near future. God bless!
Don is doing great! We are continuing with dialysis every night. We have had our first checkup since beginning this process and all blood work is in the normal range. He hasn't had normal blood work for several years. Thankful for God's many blessings on this journey.
Several weeks have passed and we are doing ok. Don is doing his dialysis treatments every night on his new cycler! ***No! Not a motorcycle***. His new machine is what they call a cycler. The treatments are going as well as could be expected. It is a bit of a process but we are very thankful that this is even an option. He seems to be feeling somewhat better, although he would NEVER admit that he was feeling bad in the first place. He has already managed to start playing golf. This was a huge relief for me as I know how much he loves to play. I was afraid that he might not be able to adjust to the new catheter in is stomach. He did great!
I keep reminding myself daily to have faith and trust in God's plan for all of this. Even though we don't understand, we know he is fulfilling something Great. I can't wait to see what that is.
Cayla
Our journey continues as Don goes for "cycler" trianing today. This is the machine that will allow him to do his treatments during the night while he sleeps. This is a huge blessing for us as we are both ready for a little sleep. God has really been good to us throughout this transition. Don is feeling better and looking better due to treatments. He is working and wanting to play golf (hence the weather). I'm sure that will actually happen in the near future. Thanks for all the continued prayers and support. I still have faith that our journey is going to have a GREAT outcome. God is teaching us ALOT along the way.
Love you all!
Cayla
This week has been a challenge so far as we have been in dialysis training. Training was a three day process. It was tiring and a little emotionally draining for us all. We are home now. Don is officially doing dialysis at home. He is in good spirits about it all and hopefully will start feeling better soon . We have had many blessings along the way and are continuing to pray daily. Thank you so much for all the support we have already received. It helps so much knowing our friends and family are there for us. Please continue to pray for a transplant!
