After starting dialysis at the age of 19, Brooke received a living donor transplant from her sister, Michelle. After seven years it began to reject and the transplant was lost. Brooke returned to dialysis for the past 8 and a half years but the treatments are consuming much of her daily life. The effects of long term Dialysis are starting to become very apparent and more severe. Dialysis treatments are three times a week for four hours each, leaving her exhausted. An active person by nature, she has spent a good deal of her time baking and making jewelry. She longs to get her energy back to return to her passions.
A transplant will also give Brooke her time back so she can move forward with all the professional and personal opportunities that are virtually impossible while on dialysis. At the moment, she must follow health restrictions on almost every aspect of life, including not leaving home for more than 2 days at a time, following a strict renal diet and being restricted to drinking 32 ounces of fluids a day.
To help with the financial burden of Brooke’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Northeast Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Please consider a contribution. Everything helps!
Your support is critical to the success of Brooke’s transplant and recovery experience. Please know that every contribution counts and helps. On behalf of Brooke and her friends and family, we thank you in advance for your kind consideration.
Thank you for your support!
Well, I'm a bit late to post this on here but.....the transplant finally happened!!!!!! March 28th I became the meat sheif for Brunhilda the kidney!!! And she is spying everything in her path. All of the things that made my first transplant difficult were almost a non issue this time. Meds are still being adjusted so I'm not 100% and the incision still has a ways to go to heal but I feel like I ha ent felt in over 20 years. It's truly amazing. I'll post more soon!! Thank you to everyone single person who donated or shared the link. I wouldn't have been able to dot his without you all!!!!
Well....it looks like it may actually be happening. I'm currently waiting for the last crossmatch test to see if this kidney is a go. I should know within a few days if it's going to happen. Bloodwork is done..as is the paperwork all signed. So thanks to my friend Grace, who donated in my name several months back, someone in Minnesota has a kidney and hopefully soon, so will I. So blessed to have amazing humans in my world. Thank you to everyone who has continued to support me through the past 12 years I've been back on dialysis. I love you guys!!!
Well guys, it's getting super close!! Dental surgery on June 1st....recovery from that and that will be my last clearance. Then we find out if me and the mystery donor are a match, if not we will enter the donor swap pool from the kidney registry. A transplant is finally on the horizon! That being said, I still need help paying for the dental surgery as my insurance won't pay for any of it and I will still need to get an Airbnb in the city for 2 week shafter the actual transplant. Not to mention food and supplies for living out of the house for almost 3 weeks. Gas and parking are adding up from all the appointments as well, it's more than I can possibly handle on Social Security so if you guys could maybe donate or share would be a giant help. Thanks again nn and hopefully I won't have to post this much longer and I can get back to being full beast mode me!!!
BIG UPDATE ON TRANSPLANT THINGS!!!!
I started going to Boston University for my dental clearance workup. They took me in almost immediately. I've now had 3 appointments in as many weeks. And the diagnosis is not great but could be so much worse. All my molars have to be pulled. And I need a deep cleaning on the rest. That should be enough to have my dental clearance by the end of next month. They are doing the cleaning 2 quadrants at a time and the extractions will all be done at one as a surgical procedure. It's gonna suck so maaaany asses to have all this work done is short span but I definitely don't want my mystery donor to back out. And you know, I'd like to go away for my birthday one of these years... And not have to do dialysis anymore. It's so very close to happening!!!
To have this happen though, I still need to raise funds for the post transplant expenses and now the dental work. I'm about halfway there so if you share the page, it would help soooo very much!!
Thanks guys for sticking with me for all this time. I really appreciate and love you!!!!
I was trying to not make this an announcement but I really can't stop thinking about it .....
I have a medically cleared donor!!!! I don't know who it is but the next step is me getting my teeth taken care of.
Basically what this means is they have someone who is fit to donate but they can't test us to see if we match until I get my dental clearance. Whoever this person is, has asked if we are not a match to to the donor swap and also wants to wait until I'm active on the list again before they go in that pool. My coordinator said they def want to help me. So that being said....
THANK YOU WHOEVER YOU ARE!!
So now I gotta get funds together for my dental work so if you can please share or help with a donation I would be truly grateful. A kidney is finally on the horizon!!! I started being seen at Boston University this week for the dental work but I have to pay out of pocket for it all. They are going to get me in again next week so I'll have a game plan and more of an idea what it will run financially. Dental work is ridiculously expensive, so every little bit helps!!!! Thanks everyone!!!!
Hey everyone....it's been a long while since I posted here, bit it's looking like a transplant will happen sooner rather than later! I want to thank everyone for helping me with this. It's been a few years since I started this and I have had to use the funds for different medical issues that made me inactive. I have had about 6 surgeries since the last update and now will hopefully be re activated ina few weeks. I am going to need a place to stay close to the hospital, so I am trying to raise funds for an Air Bnb that's close to BWH. Its a bit pricey but the recovery period is so important and I've been through it before so this really isy best option if I can swing it. If you can help or share , it would be greatly appreciated. Il be updating things a lot more the next week to catch everyone up on what's happened since the last post!!
Well, things have been pretty crazy medically again. My arm has been having some clotting issues so it has been on and off and on again with bloodthinners. There is a narrowing in my access that is making it very easily clotted. Back on the blood thinners to see if the clot resolves itself in the next few weeks. My energy has been low and the depression is starting to bang on my door again as it does everytime this time of year. I'm trying to find someone who is good at keeping up on social media like this because I certainly do suck at it most of the time. Everyone who has helped and continues to help me in even the smallest ways( Miss Vonne Bittercup I'm looking at you and Nina and Ryan. You guys seriously kick ass. And this one chick at my dialysis clinic who is also a patient is cool as fuck too. She needs a kidney too. Fuck. I wanna find her one too because she is so fucking awesome...
The nephrectomy went well. A bit sore still but definitely feeling better. Made a Kidney Hunt page on FB as well...check it out here!! https://www.facebook.com/opositivekidneyhuntforBrooke?fref=ts
I have to have in one week, an emergency nephphrectomy of the transplanted kidney from 2003. We had a good run but unfortunately it is becoming necrotic, and making it's way to a decomposing demise inside me and trying to make it's own way out. Yes. Tt hurts. So we're just gonna take that lil bugger out next Thursday at Brigham and Womens' around high noon. LOL I still have the Appointment on the 5th of August for the fistulagram and to see what they are going to go with my dialysis access, open it or what. Almost outta the woods. Any support you can show here is very much appreciated. The funds the are collected through this site go to nothing but my medical and pre-and transplant cost that insurance will not cover, like parking within the hospitals and medications that are imperative but also ungodly expensive. Read my on Facebook and may be do some research and maybe you'll find you have it in you to be a donor and help not just me me but perhaps others!!!
thanks for all your time and effort. I appreciative you all!! Time to get a kidney found so I can start kicking life's ass for REAL!!
