For 25 years, Brian Lewis served the people of Baltimore City as a homicide detective, dedicating his career to protecting others and helping families through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Today, Brian and his family are facing a battle of their own.

On July 29, 2025, just two years after retiring, Brian’s life changed forever after a devastating fall left him with a severe spinal cord injury resulting in quadriplegia. The injury affected the C3-C6 levels of his spine, altering every aspect of daily life in an instant.

Emergency surgery helped stabilize his spine, but it marked the beginning of an incredibly difficult journey filled with lengthy hospitalizations, intensive rehabilitation, medical complications, and countless physical and emotional challenges.

Since that day, Brian has fought through infections, sepsis, multiple surgeries, and the immense challenges that come with adapting to life after a spinal cord injury. Every milestone, every bit of movement regained, and every step forward has been earned through determination, hard work, and an unwavering refusal to quit.

More Than His Injury

To those who know him, Brian is much more than a former detective or a spinal cord injury survivor.

He is a devoted husband to his wife, Thesha, of 25 years and a loving father to his daughters, Sydney and Jessica. He has always been the person his family could depend on for support, encouragement, wisdom, and strength. Whether offering advice during tough times or celebrating life’s successes, Brian has consistently put his family and others before himself.

Even in the face of unimaginable circumstances, he continues to inspire everyone around him with his resilience, humor, courage, and positive spirit.

The Challenges Ahead

Life after a spinal cord injury comes with extraordinary challenges that most people never have to consider.

Simple daily activities such as getting dressed, transferring safely, attending medical appointments, and maintaining independence now require specialized equipment, ongoing therapy, home modifications, caregiver support, and costly medical supplies.

While insurance helps cover some expenses, many critical needs are only partially covered or not covered at all.

Funds raised will help support:

• Ongoing medical care and rehabilitation

• Specialized adaptive equipment

• Home accessibility modifications

• Transportation for medical appointments

• Caregiver assistance

• Medical supplies and other essential expenses related to recovery

Through this difficult journey, our family has learned firsthand how overwhelming the financial, emotional, and logistical burdens of a spinal cord injury can be.

Our hope is that Brian’s story becomes more than a personal recovery journey. We hope it becomes a source of awareness, education, and support for others facing similar challenges. Every contribution helps Brian continue fighting for greater independence while also helping build a foundation for increased spinal cord injury awareness and future support for others navigating this life-changing diagnosis.
