Living with Type 1 diabetes means facing daily challenges that are unpredictable and overwhelming. Diabetic Alert Service Dogs can help improve over all safety and day-to-day life. These specially trained dogs alert to dangerous changes in blood sugar levels at least 30 minutes before glucose monitors and can catch changes before diabetics ever feel the symptoms. These dogs are also trained to retrieve necessary supplies, alert to both high and low blood sugars, get help, and wake their handler out of their sleep upon detection of dangerous blood sugar changes. November 2025, Caitlyn suffered a seizure in the middle of the night because her continuous glucose monitor failed to alert her that her blood sugar was dangerously low. When EMS got there her blood sugar was 32. Unfortunately, the cost of obtaining a service dog is up to the handler and insurance doesn’t cover any of the costs. The total cost is $20,000.
