Family and friends of Charmaine Lucas are raising funds for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with a transplant. Charmaine’s family has chosen to fundraise with Help Hope Live in part because donations are tax deductible for contributors and will only be used to cover medical and related expenses.

Charmaine was diagnosed with ANCA Vasculitis in June 2025, a rare autoimmune disease that attacked both her kidneys and her retina. She went through chemotherapy and immunosuppressant IV infusion treatments, and thankfully the vasculitis is now in remission.

However, the disease caused severe damage to her kidneys. Charmaine is now living with End-Stage Renal Failure and currently relies on dialysis to survive. After many appointments and treatments, her doctors have determined that she needs a kidney transplant in order to regain her health and quality of life.

But Charmaine is much more than her diagnosis. She loves cooking and caring for her family, and some of her happiest moments are spent preparing meals and bringing loved ones together. Her family and friends know her as someone who brings warmth and kindness into their lives.

Over the past year, Charmaine has faced many difficult challenges. Through hospital visits, treatments, and dialysis, she has shown incredible resilience and strength. Even during the hardest days, she continues to focus on her family and the people she loves.

Living with kidney failure has changed Charmaine’s daily life in many ways. Dialysis treatments take up hours of her time each week and often leave her feeling physically drained. There are constant medical appointments and strict health routines, which make everyday life more difficult.

Charmaine is now preparing for a kidney transplant, which will give her the chance to live a healthier and more independent life. However, the costs associated with this journey are significant. Even with insurance, there are many expenses her family must manage, including:

• Transplant and donor surgery costs

• Anti-rejection medications

• Travel to and from the transplant center

• Post-transplant housing close to the transplant center

• Follow-up appointments and lab work

• Medical expenses during recovery while she is unable to work

With a successful transplant, Charmaine hopes to focus on healing and returning to a more normal life. She looks forward to having the energy to spend more time with family and friends and to once again enjoy the activities she loves.
