This year has been difficult with my health and with finances. Most people with bleeding disorders and people who have other rare diseases meet the deductible in their insurance policy in the first month of the year because the drugs are so expensive. They are some of the most expensive drugs on the commercial market. Unfortunately, it is August and I have not met my deductible yet. This is because my father has an Alternative Funding Program aka AFP in his insurance policy and it has created a lot of problems in my life. Last year, I missed approximately 25% of my scheduled factor subcutaneous injections. God was the only thing protecting me from sustaining a bleed, and miraculously, I did not get a bleed in any of my joints, just soft tissue and nosebleeds. I have paid thousands of dollars of medical bills so far this year for the 35 outpatient visits I have had including Orthpopedics, Hematology, Pain Control clinic, Gastroenterology, Nutristionist, dentistry, Physical Therapy and Chronic Pain psychology for the hemophilic arthopathy in my joints and my Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). I had 64 medical visits in 2024. I have become more ill as I have gotten older, with being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and pernicious anemia last year. Now, I need to get multiple subcutaneous injections.
I have paid for all of this using my life’s savings. I am a full-time student and I do not have much additional time to work because of my health, managing my diagnoses, and the amount of advocacy that has been required the past few years. I am listing a goal of $4,500 so I can put towards medical bills, prescription copays, vehicle repairs and maintenance, subway and bus fare, parking fees, and meals when I have long days in Boston for medical visits.
This is the first fundraiser I have created for myself. I have done many fundaisers and volunteering with Boston Children’s Hospital, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, the New England Hemophilia Association (NEHA), the EveryLife Foundation for Rare Diseases, Hope Charities, the CHES Foundation. I am dedicated to advocating and supporting all kids and adults with rare diseases to ensure they get the medical care they need, and this time I am the one who needs support.
When I am not in a hospital, getting an infusion, treating a bleed, or dealing with health insurance, I enjoy watching the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics games on television. I am a diehard fan and try to make it to one game for each time every season. I enjoy listening to music such as classic rock and grunge. I like to visit Boston, my favorite city. I also volunteer as a camp counselor every summer at a few different camps for children with serious, chronic, life-altering illnesses. I love visiting museums in New England.
