EJ Moses

Family and friends of E.J. Moses are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with a catastrophic injury. E.J. has chosen to fundraise with Help Hope Live in part because donations are tax deductible for contributors and will only be used to cover medical and related expenses.

On January 18th, EJ slipped on black ice while walking his dog, Flanker. This fall resulted in a severe spinal cord injury which has had a significant impact on his overall mobility. He received a cervical spinal cord decompression with stabilization from C2-T1 to alleviate severe spinal cord swelling and hopefully restore motor function.

The recovery from Central Spinal cord injury and extensive surgery is expected to be lengthy and challenging. EJ has had 2 1/2 years of extensive rehabilitation, physical therapy, and medical follow-ups to regain strength, mobility, and independence.. He has tried nearly every modality available to improve his function and has researched every possible form of recovery therapies that would aid in his increased mobility.

EJ has trialed an external spinal cord stimulator which has greatly increased his function and mobility even in the short trial he was able to participate in. This external system “is designed to improve hand sensation and strength for people with a chronic cervical spinal cord injury. “The system is comprised of a Stimulator that delivers electrical pulses to the cervical spinal cord via Electrodes placed on the skin at the back of the neck.ARCEX is meant to be used in conjunction with functional task practice in the clinic and with take-home exercises at home to support personalized rehabilitation in people with spinal cord injury.” (Copied from Onward website on the Arc Ex)

This external stimulator has been FDA approved in the US, however it is not covered under insurance and is astronomically expensive. Several rehabilitation facilities have acquired this device to incorporate into their treatment plans for improving upper extremity function and mobility. However, there are no facilities close in the vacinity that offers this and EJ would need to relocate temporarily to obtain the therapy. We have been working closely with a local rehabilitation facility, to purchase this device so that the local community of spinal cord injured patients, could benefit from this device as well.

We are reaching out to our community for support to help alleviate some of the financial burden that comes along with EJ’s extensive recovery plan and the potential purchase of this device to benefit the community.
