Alanna Flax-Clark

Family and friends of Alanna Flax-Clark are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with Catastrophic Illness.

Starting early 2021, Alanna could feel her body declining and getting weaker. Finally, in August, Alanna was hospitalized unable to breathe. There, they did MRIs followed by a spinal tap which showed white matter changes in the brain and spinal cord, and an inflammatory/demyelinating process which is affecting her entire body. Alanna has been hospitalized two times since for various treatments with little change in her condition.

Alanna was previously a very active Para Equestrian, training for the Paralympics in the sport of Para Dressage. You could find her at the barn every single day riding and staying active outside of her training on the horse. She was also very independent; however, since her first hospitalization her parents have been out from CA caring for her. Her increased weakness and decreased mobility have kept her primarily away from the barn. Her balance and weakness have made riding increasingly difficult, as has just pushing her manual wheelchair, and sitting up through the day. While she’s been keeping up with her rehabilitative therapy, the doctors are unsure if this will be her new baseline.

As you can imagine, the cost of Alanna’s care and recovery are extreme. While Alanna is fortunate to have health insurance and has been trying her best to work to stay on top of things, there are hospital stays, appointments, and treatments that keep her away. However, not everything is covered by insurance. Alanna needs to make modifications to her vehicle and wheelchair that will be needed to allow her to get her and her chair in and out of the car so she can once again be able to drive independently, and the modifications to her wheelchair to give it an electric motor so she can move around without the use of her arms like she once had.

Alanna has chosen to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors.
