PLEASE HELP US GIVE ANDREA A LITTLE PIECE OF HER LIFE BACK!

Andrea is a 31-year-old, beautiful woman that was once full of life who made everyone around her smile. In September 2021 Andrea was in a different state than her family and became a victim of domestic violence that left her with an anoxic brain injury and on a ventilator. Her doctors believed she wouldn’t survive and recommended we end her life support. Andrea and our family never gave up and never gave in. Andrea did survive and got herself off of the ventilator. When she was off the ventilator her insurance co. refused to pay for her care in a hospital and she wasn’t well enough to come home with us, so they forced us to put her into a nursing home. Andrea was being abused in the nursing home, she had to be admitted to the hospital ICU 3 times because of the abuse and she lost 62 1/2 pounds in the 6 months she was there. This was during the height of Covid so there was no visitation which meant there was nothing we could do to help her. After 6 months of legal fighting with the nursing home to release her, we finally got to bring her home with us. Andrea is non-verbal, non-mobile, has a tracheostomy and a feeding tube, but her injury affects her swallowing and her body. Andrea is totally aware of everything that is going on around her and tries to follow commands, she just can’t get her body to do what she wants it to. we are blessed because she is home with family.

Andrea was always a ray of sunshine when she walked into a room. She always found a way to make everyone laugh and have fun. she grew up in Florida and has always loved going to the beach and being in the sun. Our family always called her a beach brat because up until her injury she was constantly going to the beach.

Because Andrea never received any physical therapy at the hospital or the nursing home, she was just left lying in bed all day and night and we weren’t allowed to visit to do range of motion with her she developed spasticity in her arms and legs. Because of her spasticity we are unable to get her into a car without putting her in tremendous pain We do tele-visits with her doctor for her appointments to avoid putting her in pain.

Andrea’s family is fundraising for a wheelchair accessible van for her. My husband and I are Andrea’s only caregivers, and we are both 60 years old. We have spent our entire retirement savings on staying in another state while we were fighting to get Andrea home, the cost to get her back home, buying all of the lifesaving machines she needs and the care she needs 24 hours a day, we will never be able to afford one for her. Andrea has always loved to be outside in the sun, but because we are unable to take her anywhere it breaks my heart to know she only gets to see outside through a window. Andrea has only been outside 3 times since Sept. 2021 to go to and from doctor visits. If we had a wheelchair accessible van for her, we could take her out places and let her be in the sun. I truly believe being out in the sun and being out with her family will help her physically, mentally and emotionally.

At the time of her injury Andrea was 29 years old, she has just turned 31 and will most likely be non-verbal, non-mobile, with a tracheostomy and a feeding tube for the rest of her life. The fact she is mentally aware means that she probably knows that she will probably be confined to a bed for the rest of her life.
