More Than Walking….

My name is April Ballentine. I was born and raised here in Lexington Kentucky.

I am a victim of domestic violence which left me paralyzed. On August 9, 2013, I was hunted down, stalked and received shots throughout my whole body. He attempted to shoot me in my face but I was able to block the firing of the gun. I recall gaining consciousness and saying to myself “I gotta get up!”

I was gasping for air and could hear the sirens in the background. I quickly faded away. I was transported to University of Kentucky’s Trauma Unit. Woke up to be told I coded 3x’s and was in the ICU for weeks as police officers and the K9 united guarded my door for safety.

I will never forget! The University of Kentucky and Dr. Andrew Bernard saved my life. Now nine years later they are bringing the technology here that will allow me to walk again.

For the past 6 years, I spend time with the students. Last time PT Denise surprisingly asked me if I would like to stand. This was another emotional milestone for me. I did not want to sit back down.

I have been given the opportunity by the University to try the ReWalk 6.0 exoskeleton. So, this is a big day for me and a big day for University of Kentucky.

Today, my goals are simple. I want to live each day to the fullest and maintain peace in my life. I still struggle with PTSD but I am able to recognize depression and my triggers of anxiety. I want to be proactive in my health care and thwart off so many conditions that can happen being chair bound.

Walking is medicine. It would be so nice to hug my family and friends – standing. I’d jump for joy if I had the opportunity to walk my daughter down the aisle in November.

I am an advocate/speaker/voice and resource for other fellow victims and survivors of domestic violence.

It is by God’s Grace and Mercy that I am still here. My future is bright and I am ready to get back to walking.
