In the spring of 2007, my daughter, Ashlee Ellsworth, was diagnosed with Budd-Chiari syndrome. Budd-Chiari is a rare condition where blood flow from the liver is blocked or restricted. If untreated, it can lead to liver failure within 3-5 years. This condition is typically seen in young adults between the ages of 35 and 40. However, in Ashlee’s case, it affected her starting at the age of 18.

Flash forward to June 2024. Ashlee is a mother of 4, maintaining a busy home, including a menagerie of animals, all while working full-time as a special education para professional at her son’s elementary school.

The day after Father’s Day, Ashlee became ill and was taken to the emergency room in Tucson, AZ. Unfortunately, due to her condition and symptoms, the physicians in the ER were not comfortable treating her. Ashlee had to be transported by helicopter to the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, 2 ½ hours from home.

We knew early on that there would be a chance that Ashlee may require a liver transplant someday, but we never expected it happen out of the blue when she was doing so well. Currently, Ashlee is still in the hospital and is on the transplant list waiting for her perfect match.

It has not been an easy road for her or her family, emotionally or financially. The road to recovery will be long. She will also need to be on medications for the rest of her life and may not be able to return to work with young children due to her compromised immune system.
