Billie Gunter

Billie Sue Gunter has lived in Nashville, TN her whole life. She graduated from Overton High School and, together with her husband Buddy, raised two daughters. Both daughters live close by with their families so Billie Sue delights in being Mema to three grandsons and a granddaughter.

In 2009, Billie Sue was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD. Today she is at stage 4 COPD that has caused life threatening damage to her lungs. She is on oxygen 24 hours a day. Billie Sue has been evaluated at Vanderbilt University Hospital and is considered an excellent candidate for a lung transplant. Transplantation is lifesaving but financing this procedure is a monumental task that Billie Sue cannot meet without support from friends, family, and the community.

To help ease the financial burden of pre- and post- transplant-related expenses, Billie Sue’s family has set up a fundraising campaign with HelpHOPELive. Monies raised will help with expenses that are not covered by insurance such as the cost of travel, relocation closer to the center and copays for medications she will need to take for the rest of her life. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the South-Atlantic Lung Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant related expenses only.

Billie Sue dreams of the days she can spend with her family being able to breathe freely, something most of us take for granted. She would like to be an advocate to stop smoking and educate young people to never start. Billie Sue would love to go on hunting trips with her husband. Most of all, she wants to be able to breathe in fresh air again.
