Bob Richey III

Dear Friends and Family,

In August, 2012, our son Bob was swimming in the ocean off Atlantic City, enjoying a late summer weekend with friends. Bob loves the ocean and swimming but on this day he took one casual dive into a seemly innocent looking wave and in an instant his life was changed forever. Bob hit the wave at the wrong angle and suffered a severe fracture to the C-5 vertebra in his neck. This catastrophic injury resulted in severe spinal cord damage leaving him paralyzed below the chest and with very limited movement in his arms.

Prior to his accident, Bob was looking forward to attending graduate school at University of Denver where he was offered a scholarship and an assistantship for classical guitar performance. He enjoyed competing in triathlons and was proud of his completion of an Ironman triathlon. He now faces great challenges ahead but has always been a hard worker and is showing the same courage and determination that we all know him to have.

Beyond hard work, however is the reality of the many expenses that will not be covered by health insurance. Bob will have many uninsured injury-related expenses such as: home modifications, vehicle modifications, rehabilitation therapy, equipment purchases, co-pays, deductibles, medications and supplies, and many more.

To assist with these uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in Bob’s honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for over 35 years. In 2000, they expanded their mission to include those who have sustained a catastrophic injury. All contributions are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law, are held by Help Hope Live in the Mid-Atlantic Catastrophic Injury Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for injury-related expenses only.
