Brady Furbish

Two years ago, at the age of 12 our youngest son Brady was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy. The only cure for this disease is a heart transplant.

DCM is when the hearts ability to pump blood is lessened because its main pumping chamber, the left ventricle, is enlarged and weakened. It can temporally be controlled with medication, and for the last two years medicine has kept Brady’s heart stable. In November of last year, Brady had a heart catheterization done and it showed that Brady had excess water on his heart, and he was in the hospital for a week. They also told us at the time that it was time to think about getting him listed for a heart transplant.

We had the heart transplant consultation in December of 2018 and shortly after that he was listed as a 2, which is the lowest priority as a med change made him stable again. Then in February of this year he had another heart cath done and they found that his pulmonary vessels are being compromised and that it was time to insert a LVAD. A LVAD is a left ventricular assist device that is used for patients in end stage heart failure. They surgically implant a mechanical pump which then helps the left ventricle (main pumping chamber of the heart) pump blood to the rest of the body.

Brady will be having this LVAD put in on March 20, 2019 in Ann Arbor a CS Mott Children’s hospital and he will be in the hospital for 4 to 6 weeks. Having this LVAD put in will put Brady on list 1A of the transplant list, which is the highest list they have.
