Brandon Carroll

We are Laura and Mike Carroll.

Many of you that know us personally and might have had a glimpse into how we have been dealing with our son Brandon’s adult Autism. You might have seen the photos or listened to our stories about private home care and the physical harm, neglect, and a very broken system that Brandon has experienced, and that we have fought to improve.

We have advocated, fought, and pleaded with many to change the system in order to give Brandon, and many others, a better chance at a little bit of happiness and an enriching lifestyle. Each time we share our stories we end up experiencing our own guilt and an overwhelming sadness.

When “B” was younger we were often asked “What will you do with him when he’s an adult?” We thought that was an odd question as we intended on continuing to do exactly what we were doing…until we couldn’t do it anymore: Helping Brandon live his best life. At this point, we have swallowed our pride and are saying that we need help. Brandon is a 24/7 job with high sensory needs and a love for the outdoors. He struggles on a profound level when he is inactive or kept indoors. He has an acute need to stay extremely active. For many years we did our best to keep up with him. Physically speaking, that is no longer possible.

After getting two, separate 30 day termination notices from two private “residential habilitation” providers within one year, Brandon was taken out of care and is now living full time at home (since July 2021) which necessitated Mike quitting his job and Laura going to part-time. We have been discussing how we can work collectively to create a better living situation for Brandon with some great outside activities and staffing in order to create a level of care that Brandon did not enjoy in his previous 6 years of living in residential habilitation environments.

This is where we need your help. We are humbly asking for support from our community, family and friends in order to build a rich environment that so many Autistic individuals need. We want to create an outdoor space at our/his residence where Brandon can feel safe and challenged. We would also like to seek medical and consulting expertise from sources that are not covered by Idaho Medicaid, and are often out of the area. Lastly, there are services such as equine therapy, music therapy, occupational therapy, etc. that would benefit Brandon if available or if we could travel to obtain the services.

With your help, we will move forward with plans that we believe can have a profound, positive impact on Brandon and others in his community of developmentally disabled adults. It WILL take a village and we are hopeful that you might consider becoming part of our village.
