Brenda Schenk

Family and friends of Brenda Schenk are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with a Transplant. Brenda has chosen to fundraise with Help Hope Live in part because donations are tax deductible for contributors and will only be used to cover medical and related expenses.

In her early 20’s, Brenda ran the daily village clinic in the jungle of Papua New Guinea. Binding wounds, dispensing antibiotics and even assisting in the birthing of babies. She is married and has a son who is 21. She was very involved in her churches activities and enjoyed spending time with her friends.

Brenda donated a kidney to her sister in 1989. In 2022 she was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure and began home dialysis. In April 2024 her remaining kidney was removed due to cancer. Leaving her with no kidneys in her body. As a result of this she spends quite a bit of time in the hospital. She is now eligible for a kidney transplant. Because of her diagnosis she does not have the energy to enjoy things like travel, participation as a co-leader of Grief Share, and spend time with family and friends.

Brenda’s fundraising for the transplant will help pay for all of the expenses that are not covered by insurance, including but not limited to the cost of traveling to and from Seattle, lodging, food, copays, relocation (post-transplant) to Seattle for six weeks of follow-up visits, and long-term medication expenses for the rest of her life. Plus, expenses in Yakima which will have to be maintained while in Seattle (rent, utilities etc.). The estimated cost of all these expenses will be $20,000 or more.

Brenda hopes her new kidney will allow her to get back to normal life. She is looking forward to renewed energy, and health so that she can again participate fully in the things she is passionate about.
