Charanita Witty

Friends of Char Witty are raising money with the non-profit Help Hope Live to fund medical expenses for her stem cell transplant.

A member of our church needs financial help to secure a stem cell or bone marrow transplant. Charanita “Char” Witty has myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) a rare type of blood cancer that prevents her bone marrow from making mature blood cells. Diagnosed in 2019, Char continues to undergo treatment, but the cancer will be fatal unless she receives a transplant soon.

While insurance will pay for the procedure itself, it will not pay for the follow-up care that is required. Char will need ten weeks of 24-hour /day care in a city located three hours from her home. Because the transplant will leave her temporarily without a functioning immune system, it must be with an individual caregiver rather than in a facility. Her transplant has been approved but can’t move forward until a caregiver is in place.

Char does not have family members able to provide this care, which has dramatically increased the out-of-pocket costs she faces. We are raising funds to pay for the needed caregiver, enabling her to undergo the transplant as soon as possible, before her health deteriorates further.

About Char: Char grew up in a small town in Northern Mississippi, is a graduate of one of the historical black colleges and Joined a sorority. She raised her special needs son, Austin, as a loving single mother In Virginia. Because of MDS and other health conditions including fibromyalgla and chronic fatigue syndrom, she is now on permanent SSA disability.

Char is an avid reader: Jane Austen and the neuroscientist Eric Kandel are among her favorite authors. She has a special affection for Mary Ingalls Wilder (Little House on the Prairie) and Anne Shirley (Anne of Green Gables). She loves being around horses and learning about the origin of the last names of people she meets. Char is creative and enjoys the “therapy” of art and music, especially the violin, along with meditation for relaxation. When her health allows, she attends her church.

Fun fact: Cha r’s late aunt Mary was a cook in Memphis for Elvis Presley, who bought her a house in that city.
