Charles Varallo

The family of Charles Varallo is raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with Charles’ Transplant. Donations are tax deductible for contributors and will only be used to cover medical and related expenses.Charles was admitted to University of Alabama Birmingham on June 28, 2024, for a liver transplant. He spent 5 weeks in SICU, on life support and dialysis because his kidneys had also shut down. He spent an additional 4 weeks in the hospital and physical rehab. All of his muscles had atrophied due to being bedridden for 9 weeks. He is still going for physical rehab, bloodwork and clinic visits nearly every day of the week. Last week, the pathology report came back on the sample taken from the old liver, which showed cancer. He will undergo imaging in a few weeks to see if the cancer had spread prior to transplant. The doctors are hopeful that it has not. On 9/24, he was readmitted to UAB with pneumonia and the medical team suspected a heart attack, which thankfully, was not the case. He is still hospitalized and once discharged, will continue physical rehab, bloodwork and clinic visits, but will finally return to Pensacola, after 3 long months. Clinic visits will continue in Mobile, the nearest Hepatologist to home. He is currently prescribed 23 medications, including immunosuppressants, which he will take for the rest of his life. We are hopeful some of the medications will be gradually decreased, as some of these must come from specialty pharmacies.Charles was previously a triathlete and this situation is a struggle for him mentally, as well. He will continue to get stronger, but as you can imagine, he has not worked for a while and it will be quite some time before he is able to work again. The hospital and doctor bills are astronomical, as you can imagine. The family struggled with this decision to create a campaign, but it is being created out of necessity.
