Chester Smith

Chester (Chet) Smith is a 35-year-old husband and father in need of a kidney transplant and he needs the help of his community to make it happen. Transplants are life-saving but very expensive.

In 2008, Chet was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), which is the last stage of kidney disease. It means his kidneys failed and they stopped working; he cannot survive without dialysis or a kidney transplant. On Aug 4, 2008 Chet had dialysis for the first time. Chet is now completely dependent on dialysis which he undergoes every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. His only chance to return to good health is kidney transplant.

Chet is very active in his church where he runs the sound board during service. You may also know him through his wife, Temperance Donohue Smith or his step-daughter, MaKenzie Donohue.

Transplants are life-saving but financially draining. Even with Medicare coverage, there are many out-of-pocket expenses including deductibles, co-pays, clinic visits and lifetime anti-rejection medications costing around $1,200 a month.

To help with the financial burden of Chester Smith’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in his honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law, are held by Help Hope Live in the South-Central Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant-related expenses only.
