Chris Riedy Receives Life-Saving Gift

Author CS Lewis said, “Something deep in the human heart breaks at the thought of a life of mediocrity.” For Chris Riedy, nothing could be more true.

An athletic trainer, Chris has been dealing with heart issues for more than 20 years. A diabetic, he exercises and eats right, but since 1999, Chris has endured two bypasses, pacemakers, biventricular devices and repeated bouts of congestive heart failure. Despite these measures, Chris reached end stage heart failure in 2021 and needed a heart transplant.

That gift came on July 20, 2021 when Chris received a new heart. It’s a gift that will ultimately restore the life he and his wife, Jen, have largely put on hold.
“Life will be totally different,” says Jen. “We’ll be able to do things we haven’t been able to. Chris hasn’t been able to work, workout, or take a family vacation. The last few months have been especially stressful with travelling to be with Chris at the hospital 75 miles away.”

With the surgery behind him, the next year will have its own set of challenges. Chris will focus on regaining his strength with intense cardiac therapy and routine doctor’s visits to ensure the heart isn’t being rejected. He’ll take approximately 80 pills a day that support his heart but will leave him immunosuppressed for some time.
