On July 29, 2026, after more than a year of waiting, appointments, hospital stays, travel, and nine previous donor offers, Christopher received the call that changed everything. His tenth liver offer became the one.

The timing made the moment even more meaningful: July 29 was Christopher and Matthew’s 10th wedding anniversary.

Christopher underwent a successful liver transplant and is now home recovering with a new liver and a very different future ahead of him. His early lab results have been incredibly encouraging, with liver function numbers improving to levels he has not seen in many years.

The road to this point was long. Christopher was diagnosed with decompensated cirrhosis in the spring of 2025 and spent more than a year navigating increasingly serious liver disease while pursuing transplant through two medical centers. He and Matthew traveled between Colorado and Phoenix for evaluations, hospital admissions, and donor offers, never knowing when the next call might finally be the one.

When that call came, the transplant itself brought one more frightening complication. Less than 12 hours after surgery, Christopher had to return to the operating room because of internal bleeding near his diaphragm. His surgical team was able to repair the problem, and he returned to recovery with his new liver functioning well.

Receiving the transplant was the milestone Christopher and everyone who loves him had hoped for, but it was not the end of the journey.

The first weeks after transplant have already included frequent blood draws, repeated medication adjustments, close monitoring by his transplant team, and the physical recovery from two major abdominal surgeries. For now, this is simply the new normal, and Christopher and Matthew are grateful to do whatever it takes to protect this liver and give it every opportunity to thrive.

The financial impact is also beginning to come into focus. Christopher’s insurance responsibility has already increased by several thousand dollars in the first weeks after transplant, while major hospital and transplant-center claims are still being processed. Ongoing expenses will include medical bills, anti-rejection and other medications, frequent laboratory testing, transplant clinic visits, travel, and other costs associated with protecting the new liver and supporting his recovery.

Christopher is a devoted husband to Matthew, who has been beside him throughout the uncertainty, the waiting, the transplant, and now recovery. At home, they are also supervised closely by Kaia, their much-loved dog, who appears to believe Christopher’s recovery plan should involve considerably more couch time, attention, and treats than his medical team has officially prescribed.

Christopher and Matthew will forever be grateful to the family, friends, and community who stood beside them through the hardest year of their lives. Every visit, message, shared meal, ride, donation, prayer, and simple act of kindness reminded them that they were never carrying this alone. The love they have been shown is something they will never forget.

This transplant has given Christopher something that once felt increasingly uncertain: the opportunity to build a life beyond liver disease.

He is deeply aware that this second chance was made possible through the generosity of an organ donor and a family who chose to give during an unimaginably difficult moment. That gift is something Christopher and Matthew will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
