Cindy (a.k.a. Duckie) Needs a New Liver!

At 2.5 years old, Cindy loved Sesame Street (especially Ernie’s “Rubber Duckie” song!), her stuffed toys, and her new baby brother. She had a greatly enlarged liver, but no other issues or symptoms. She was thriving. Jump ahead 25 years—Cindy grew up, graduated high school, got married, became a mother, got divorced, got an education, was working in IT, and building a wide circle of friends in the community.

Suddenly, the life she was building was turned on its end. She was diagnosed with Cryptogenic Liver Cirrhosis in 2011 (Cryptogenic, meaning “we have no idea why.”) In 2015, she was found to have HCC (Hepatocellular Carcinoma), a type of liver cancer. Her life today is challenging, to say the least! She is unable to work due to the complications of her liver disease, including pain, exhaustion, swelling and other issues foreign to a typical 32-year-old. Her sole hope of returning to better health and a more normal thirty-something life, is a liver transplant.

A transplant will save her life, but it is also extremely expensive. Even with insurance, there are still many out-of-pocket costs Cindy is expected to cover, including co-pays, deductibles, lab fees, travel to and from the transplant center, and the anti-rejection medications she will have to take for the rest of her life.
