A Kind-Hearted Husband, Father, Grandfather—and Fighter

Craig Peter Scherer, 66, has always been the kind of man who gives more than he takes. He’s a devoted husband of 32 years, a father of four, grandfather to 13, and great-grandfather to 7.

He’s spent his entire life working hard, loving deeply, and leading by example. Craig has Stage 4 COPD and is now on the UNOS waitlist for a double lung transplant at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix.

Without this life-saving surgery, he will not survive the year. He’s been battling this disease since 2018, pushing through his final working years just to ensure a modest retirement. Even in pain, he kept going—because that’s who Craig is: generous, gentle, and strong. The kind of man who “wouldn’t kill a fly,” who showed his kids and grandkids how to treat a wife with respect, and who was always the first to lend a hand.

Before his diagnosis, Craig loved the open road and the open sea—riding Harleys, scuba diving in the Caribbean, and traveling the world with his wife. Together, they were the first in the family to own a home, relocating from California to Arizona to build a better life.

Today, Craig’s days are slower. He can no longer enjoy the things he once did—not even his favorite Bud Light. Every breath is a struggle, but his will to live for his family remains strong.

Craig and his wife have worked their whole lives and secured their home. But the post-transplant costs—especially medications, co-pays, and deductibles—are not fully covered by insurance. These are critical, ongoing expenses necessary to keep Craig alive after surgery.
