Daren Miller

Daren Miller, my life partner, needs your help. He was diagnosed with gastroparesis and needs a transplant to survive. Daren is not the type of person to ask others for help, as he is usually the one bringing joy and happiness to them. Anyone who has met Daren can attest that he has a spirit and energy that touches each of us on a daily basis. Now it’s our turn to smile for him and help him along this difficult path.

Several years ago, Daren was diagnosed with gastroparesis, a disorder that causes the emptying of the stomach to be severely delayed to a point where the food he eats, does not digest. Daren has had multiple stays in the hospital, surgeries which included the placing of a pace maker device onto his stomach, Botox injections, and ultimately, a sub-total gastrectomy (the removal of 90% of his stomach). A little more than a year ago, after a surgical procedure, Daren had become septic. He remained in a coma for two weeks. The wound to his stomach had to remain open to heal gradually but fistulas developed. Because of this he now requires dressing changes at least twice a day. Daren remained in the hospital for five months.

A year later, Daren still has an open wound, has not had any food except through an IV solution known as TPN, still has his dressing changes, and yet, has never lost that smile or willingness to help others. After extensive testing, doctors from a transplant team determined Daren is a good candidate for a multi-visceral transplant to replace his stomach, pancreas, small and large intestines, and possibly his liver.

Daren is ready for this journey to return to a normal life and doing the things that many of us take for granted, like eating. He is fortunate to have medical insurance; however, there are many costs that will not be covered by medical such as transportation costs, living expenses, medications, and doctor fees.
