David’s Story

David, 49, was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 27 and he has been struggling with this disease ever since. Over the last few years, David has lost his eyesight, many of his teeth, and is in kidney failure. He is now on a waiting list for a much-needed kidney transplant. It is his best hope for a long and healthy life.

David is number 12 in a family of 13 siblings. He and his wife Estella have two adult children and three grandchildren, who are the light of David’s life. He has been unable to see his beautiful grandchildren for three years due to the diabetes-related blindness. David has been a minister since 1989 and pastored his own church for 10 years. He had to give up that position due to his deteriorating health. Throughout this journey, David has remained most positive and continues to do what he sees as his calling in life. He is a wonderful preacher, marriage counselor, teacher of the word of God, father, and grandfather. He is still very much involved as a minister, preaching from the bible even though he cannot see it to read.

A transplant will be life-saving, but it will also be financially draining. Even with insurance, David will have many out-of-pocket costs including travel to and from the transplant center, co-pays, and the costly anti-rejection medications he will have to take for the rest of his life.
