Debasish Needs Your Support!

My father, Debasish (Dave) Gooptu, has been suffering for the past four years from Interstitial Lung Disease, or ILD. ILD is an irreversible, progressive and serious condition of the lungs, often times leading to a lung transplant. Debasish’s condition has rapidly deteriorated, leading to significant loss of lung function. As a result, he was forced to quit his job and has become increasingly home-bound over recent years. Debasish now has difficulty walking without oxygen support, and his lung function capacity continues to decline, as his need for oxygen increases. The doctors treating him have concluded that his condition has progressed to a stage where traditional treatment can no longer effectively arrest the disease process. After extensive medical testing, doctors have listed Debasish as a candidate for a double lung transplant.

Debasish, who lives in the Greater Chicagoland area with his wife and two children, hopes that a lung transplant will extend his life and give him a chance to return to a normal range of activities. Becoming home-bound has proved a difficult challenge for him. An MBA from the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business, as well as a licensed CPA, Debasish has over 18-years of extensive work experience as a management consultant and accountant. Debasish is looking forward to returning to work one day, and resuming active community service in his ethnic Indian-American charitable association. Additionally, he would like to raise awareness about Interstitial Lung Disease and provide support to future transplant patients. His greatest joy, however is looking forward to the birth of his first grandchild, who is due to arrive this December! Debasish is already planning on being the best grandpa he can possibly be.

A lung transplant will enable Debasish to lead a better quality of life, but the cost of a transplant is overwhelming. And this is why we write this letter of appeal for your help. Transplantation and follow-up medications and treatments are very expensive. Even with Medicare and supplemental insurance coverage, there are co-pays and deductibles, temporary lodging relocation, clinic visits, caregiver fees, and post-transplant anti-rejection medications. These costs could top $25,000 and Denasish cannot go it alone; he and his family are asking for your financial support.

To help with the financial burden of Debasish’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in his honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law, are held by Help Hope Live in the North-Central Lung Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for Debasish’s actual uninsured medically related expenses relating to the transplant and post-operative treatment and care.
