Family and friends of Debbie Oelke are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with Catastrophic Illness.

Debbie Oelke was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999. She then had 18 years of non-disabled life that included marriage, three children, a school social worker job for 11 years, an antique repurposing business for 10 years, and running events that included two half-marathons and several 5Ks. She enjoyed a medical transcription job for 11 years while staying home (during the years her kids were in the home full-time)

In 2017, Debbie had a major MS exacerbation that caused worsening weakness and numbness. This led to the use of a cane, then a walker, and currently a wheelchair.

Progression into disability caused Debbie to write a book called “Still Standing: Hope Beyond Disability,” a memoir of this progression and what the Lord has done in her life. She has since begun a series of illustrated children’s books, called Be Kind: Understanding Disability. The first of these books, “I Wish I Could Stand Up” is available.

As Debbie’s health progresses, the need for modification of their home has become apparent, as well as the potential need for a ceiling lift/track system.
Phil and Debbie’s goal is to maintain home life as “normal” as possible – maintaining Debbie’s independence as long as possible without in-home healthcare. This also includes a track system that can be independently run with a remote as long as the ability warrants it.

Debbie has chosen to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors.
