Desmond Kemp

My name is Desmond Kemp. I am 43 years old. Father of 4 boys. On September 5, 2017, I was coming home from work and was shot once in the head, as people would say I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.I was extremely active prior to this. I have been diagnosed as a Quadriplegic C5 and C6. I am told that recovery is possible however this has been a long, hard, journey with several enormous out of pocket expenses on my fixed income.Some days I feel like giving up and feel like the possibility to be myself again seem impossible. But then I remember I have 4 boys who are counting on me. I made a promise to them that one day I would be able to play basketball or football with them. Or go back to our weekends at the movies and arcade.Sometimes I sit and daydream about what it would be like for me to do these things with my childrenSince the incident, my mom has been my number one support and has been there for me through it all.She prays for me all time and as her only son I am supposed to be there for her. In life people take these things priceless things for granted.This tragic accident causes me to struggle with daily life such as feeding myself, bathing myself, and dressing myself. I go to therapy 3 times a week to gain strength, mobility, and range in motion. It has helped me a lot. In order to be able to accomplish some of my other goals and dreams.I am fundraising for an accessible vehicle which will allow me to to get to another therapy facility which has proven to help people like me. I have to use accessible Ubers for transportation and that is too expensive or depend on the City’s handicapped transportation service, which is unreliable.I am also fundraising for a handicap accessible housing: 1live with my mother currently and while I do have a stair glide the house is not equipped for me and I’m limited to the services I can received because I do not live independently.I have watched success stories on tv and read about them.
