Help Get Destiny Mobile Again

Destiny is a 34-year-old who has fought to stay as mobile as possible and live an everyday life, even with her compounding medical issues. She has been diagnosed with a rare neuromuscular disorder, a rare connective tissue disorder, and stage 3 liver disease. These disorders impact her life daily. She has struggled with the things that are necessary in life ever since these issues became more severe eight years ago.

Since the onset of symptoms of the muscle disorder as well as the connective tissue disorder, her mobility to do even daily tasks (such as self-care), let alone required functions outside the house, has become more difficult. The muscle spasms caused by minimal movement, combined with loose ligaments and joints, can often reduce her activity to almost nothing.

She would like to receive the care she needs and the necessary equipment to enable her to leave the house more frequently, beyond doctor’s visits. She has insurance; however, it will not cover physical therapy or equipment such as a much-needed mobility scooter. 

Her insurance only covers 30 visits a year for physical therapy, and each body part to be treated is supposed to require a minimum of two visits for a duration of at least 6 to 8 weeks. This doesn’t include the physical therapy for any of the surgeries that she requires on damaged joints and ligaments. At most, with her insurance, she can either have two affected areas treated with physical therapy or one surgery a year, which is diminishing her health and recovery rapidly. The intensive physical therapy she needs for regular and surgical treatment runs a bill of over $35,000. That’s not counting any further injury or diminishment from these lifelong disorders. 

The insurance won’t cover a medication that exists for two of her conditions, which she would have to pay for out of pocket. That cost, on its own, will amount to thousands annually over the course of her life.  This is unsustainable, and she can’t afford to have the treatment or relief that medication would give from these lifelong ailments.

Because of these rare disorders and damaged ligaments, her mobility has declined so severely that she needs a riding scooter; unfortunately, it’s not being covered despite repeated tearing of ligaments in her ankle. To reduce further injury and damage to her body, a scooter is necessary, which will cost $3,500 for one that meets not only her physical needs but also her living situation and mobility to maneuver it independently.

Destiny remains in high spirits, believing that gaining the care, equipment, and medication she needs will return her to where she was over 8 years ago, if not, maybe even better, since she would be receiving care that her insurance won’t cover. To enjoy life and not worry about hurting herself more when she goes out. To just live a normal and fulfilling life.
