Donna Needs Our Help!

My daughter, Donna Kovacs, is just 54 years old. Her life was thrown into upheaval several years ago when she was diagnosed with NASH (NON-alcoholic steatohepatitis). The disease had progressed to cirrhosis of her liver so doctors placed her on the liver transplant waiting list. On January 29th, 2017, Donna received the call everyone was praying for and on January 30th she was the fortunate recipient of a liver transplant at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio! Thanks to the incredible surgeons, Donna is on her way back to health, but she still needs our help because the medical bills continue to mount.

Donna was born in Danbury, CT and at the age of 12 moved to Woodbury. After graduating high school in 1980, she went on to earn a degree at Western Connecticut University. Though she had worked several jobs after graduation, it was her employment at Walnut Hill Community Church where she found her calling and stayed for the past 18 years. In 2015, her illness forced her to take a disability leave of absence from the job she loves. This change has resulted in a significant decrease in income with additional burdens of insurance and medical expenses. Donna hopes and prays to return to work, return to volunteering, and continue her many hobbies after recovering from the transplant.

Donna continues her recovery while remaining at the hospital until she is strong enough to move out. Until that time, Donna and her caregiver have rented housing in Cleveland as Donna is expected to stay near the clinic for approximately 3 months before going back to Connecticut. She now has additional costs related to relocating to Ohio; expensive post-transplant anti-rejection medications she’ll have to take for the rest of her life; the insurance premiums and copays.

A fundraising campaign in Donna’s honor has been established to help with this huge financial burden through Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax deductable to the full extent allowed by law, and are held by Help Hope Live in the Northeast Liver Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant-related expenses only.
