Hello, my name is Dorothea Brown and thank you for taking the time to visit my page today. I send blessings to you for reading and giving towards my need for a full sized wheelchair accessible van much needed for transportation!
I am a single parent and a daughter with many health issues which require much care, in which wheelchair accessible transportation is directly related to everything from eating properly to proper medical care. I live in an area which I consider to be a transportation desert. And although there is a bus system, the hours are limited, and other factors in which is not ideal. Also, there is no taxi service available to me that will accommodate my wheelchair. So, any amount of money will be a help! I have been dealing with my illness for many years and trying to remain stoic as I have gradually let hope slip away from me, my desperate need for transportation causing me to become increasingly isolated from my community, feeling less able to fulfill my role as parent, daughter, friend, as well as no longer being able to volunteer. And when my father died in 2019 and the funeral home/mortuary did not have a way for me to ride along side my sibling and mother I felt that I was at my lowest. But the desperate need is realized over and over again with appointments missed because the bus system is often overwhelmed and arrived too late. (It is required to Call for a Ride.) Or to need to put off very important appointments because I just couldn’t get there. Imagine needing to get yourself or a loved one to the ER. My family feels awful not having the resource to care for me during a health crisis and or an emergency. If I go to the hospital in an ambulance myself, insurance won’t pay for that ride, but if I did, my wheelchair can’t go along, so if they admit me or stabilize and send me home, how do I get home afterwards? This is just a little of how my life has been limited and how my health has been impacted.
