Our family desperately needs your help.

Our mother, Dorthy, is the back bone of our family. Right now, she is fighting a battle for her life. Having always been healthy, she eventually sough medical care for something she assumed to be minor. Dorthy nor our family were prepared for the devastating news she would receive; it would change our lives forever. Dorthy was given a diagnosis of a rare, fast progressing, and always fatal lung disease called Pulmonary Fibrosis. Her lungs are invasively shutting down.

Now Dorthy, at the young age of 60, a wife of nearly 40 years, mother of 3, grandmother to 8, needs a lung transplant to survive. Dorthy has always put herself last to make sure her family was cared for. She has spent her entire life working, oftentimes being labeled as a “work-a-holic.” She worked until the day she sought medical care and the doctors told her she would no longer be able to. Her lungs would never again be able to work on their own. Dorthy spent her life caring for our family. For the last 3 years, Dorthy has been the sole provider in her home after her husband, our father, had fallen ill and was no longer able to work. She strived to work even harder, determined to make sure they would be able to enjoy some type of retirement together, time they had earned together.

We are asking family and friends to please join us in fundraising for the non-profit Help Hope Live to help with critical expenses Dorthy will face immediately after surgery, including the cost of lodging near the center where she is required to stay for a minimum of 30 days following her discharge. It could realistically take up to 3 months of after-care before she goes home.

While Dorthy does have insurance, many expenses are surprisingly not covered, such as the anti-rejection medications she needs to take for the life of her new lungs. Dorthy has been told to anticipate upwards of $5,000 to $10,000 per month just for medications alone.
