Emily Seymour

The day Emily was born she faced many challenges and quickly proved her strength and determination to overcome any obstacle that was put in her path. As she has grown, her resilience has continued to shine through with ongoing health challenges.

During infancy, Emily was diagnosed with an atypical seizure disorder. It was quickly evident on her MRI of her brain that she had abnormalities. Emily’s healthcare team were unsure how these abnormalities would impact her life overall. Despite many medications, trips to renowned institutions, and endless testing, Emily’s seizures progressed and changed with time.

Not only would Emily face the diagnosis of complex seizures, but we would soon find other medical diagnoses would be put in her path to overcome. Those diagnoses would prove to complicate life for her. Her most recent diagnosis of Autism has brought many difficult obstacles to overcome; however, with the help of friends, family members, an amazing healthcare team, and her school family, Emily has shown her strength and unwillingness to give up.

When Emily was a toddler, we quickly noticed an unusual relationship with all animals. She would be able to connect with animals in unique ways. On all her visits to the different hospitals, she was routinely visited by service animals. It was evident that the service dogs quickly turned things around for the better.

We saw a decrease in anxiety and fearfulness of not only hospitals but everyday activities. We saw an increase in her independence and interactions with others when the dog was present.

Emily has been accepted to Highland Canine Training in North Carolina for a service dog. The dog will be trained for autism and epilepsy. The dog will alert on Emily’s seizures any time of day and keep her safe during and after a seizure. For autism, the dog will be trained for deep pressure therapy to regulate behavior and emotions and allow Emily to integrate into her community. The service dog will be an invaluable addition to Emily’s team and an integral resource to keep Emily safe.

Although as difficult as this journey has been, we are thankful for what qualities and character traits Emily has gained and who she has become. Emily finds the beauty in the “broken,” whether a broken sea shell, the pet that has no home, or the messy art that looks like a masterpiece to her. We are honored to be her parents!

As we add a new chapter to our journey in life, we thank you for your support! There is no one else we would rather embark on this journey with other than Emily.

As we enter this campaign, let us remember to find the beauty in the broken! Our only request is for your prayers, encouraging words, and to live every day like Emily… happy, loving, strong, and free-spirited! You belong among the wildflowers my child!
