Be a Farren Fan – Live Long and Prosper!

The year 2020 hasn’t been a great one for many, but for the Davis Family it has been especially hard. In the early summer while lifting pallets from the back of his car, Farren felt his back suddenly give out. Weeks and weeks of physical therapy and medicine to ease his back pain did nothing and he finally found himself with experts at the University of Utah and Hunstman Cancer Center in Salt Lake City, UT. What he thought was a simple back strain ended up being a significant diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma. His Thoracic vertebrae T-7 and T-8 were essentially eaten away by the tumor and it was putting pressure on his spine. By September 1, he was beginning months of chemotherapy and radiation to treat this aggressive cancer with the hopes of being prepared for an autologous stem cell transplant in 6 months. Luckily the Davis family was not naïve to the cancer battle since Farren has been an unfaltering caregiver for Nancy as she has battled breast cancer this past year.

Things were progressing well for Farren’s cancer fight despite needing to drive from Idaho Falls to Salt Lake City every single week for treatment. However, on October 14th, Farren developed a bad respiratory infection which took a turn for the worse as COVID-19 set in. Rehospitalized and now combating this severe respiratory infection on top of the cancer, Farren has been able to maintain his fighting spirit. The Davis family is very grateful to have excellent insurance and employers who are extremely gracious with work-related duties. However, as you can imagine the out-of-pocket medical costs including copays are still very significant; even with insurance. Additional stressors include expenses not covered by medical insurance such as travel to and from Utah, lodging and food, and maintaining their normal day to day expenses at their Idaho home.
