Freda Randolph-Hardy

Freda Randolph-Hardy desperately needs your help. Over twenty years ago, Freda was diagnosed with a medical condition known as polycystic kidney disease, or PKD. This condition is an inherited disorder in which clusters of cysts develop primarily within the kidneys. The cysts can grow very large, and severely affect the kidneys and other organs, causing cysts to develop and burst elsewhere in the body. Freda’s condition gradually has progressed, and her kidneys have started to fail once again. She received a kidney transplant in 2008, however she has rejected these kidneys and is once again facing end-stage-renal disease. Without a lifesaving kidney transplant, Freda’s time will soon run out and her kidney disease will get the best of her. Freda refuses to give in.

Over the years, Freda has learned more about her failing kidneys, and discovered PKD is passed down through families. Freda also has learned the hard way that PKD can lead to a severe condition known as a brain aneurysm. In 2006, Freda underwent emergency brain surgery as the result of an aneurysm on the right side of her brain, while waiting for a new kidney. After the surgery, keeping her blood pressure down became a challenge, as well as increasing urinary tract infections. As her condition became increasingly worse and the need for dialysis more evident, Freda was finally blessed in 2008 with the gift of life through a kidney transplant from a living donor.

Unfortunately, by 2011 Freda’s kidneys began to show rejection and she started peritoneal dialysis (at home over night) which lasted over a year, and after a colon operation in 2014, she started hemodialysis. Freda has been undergoing extensive medical testing and is finally on the active transplant list at the University of North Carolina Hospital awaiting a second transplant surgery.

Freda now has the opportunity to receive a new kidney and a new lease on life, once again. But she needs your help to make this happen. Even with health insurance, Freda is facing very high co-pays and deductibles, caregiver fees, clinic visits, travel and lodging expenses and more. She will also be required to take post-transplant medications to halt rejection for the rest of her life. These medications are very expensive and could top $20,000.
