On September 27th, 2005; I was living in Titusville, FL. Early that morning I got up and got in my little Hyundai and headed to work and another driver, who was driving a Ford F150 decided to inject himself with Oxycontin, drove down the wrong side of the highway and hit me head on. We both were doing approx. 50mph when we hit each other.

I was immediately flown to the closest hospital but on the way, I literally died four times before the emergency crew could stabilize me. I had to be placed in an induced coma and on a ventilator for 5 weeks due to the severity of my injuries. Once I woke up, I was told that I had been paralyzed from my chest down during the car accident, and that I was going to have to try to learn how to breath on my own again in order to come off of the ventilator. It took three to four weeks of slowly weaning off of the ventilator in order to learn how to breath on my own again, but I was able to accomplish this difficult goal.

I then asked my parents what happened to the person that hit me? They informed me that he had been arrested but was not severely injured. They also informed me that he did not have any insurance, and that he was destitute and had nothing to sue for. Eventually, he was sentenced to three years in prison for causing the accident, but it took the DA three years to finish the case. It really upset me that this person could make one bad decision that completely took away my life, and he had no way of making any restitution for what he had done. It took me several years, but thanks to my faith I was able to eventually forgive him.

Since the car accident I have gone back to college and achieved an AS degree, continued working with my family’s tax business, and volunteer with a company called Driven in downtown Las Vegas. I have not asked for any help during these 16 years after my car accident, because Medicare and Medicaid have been able to supply me with most of what I need, but this is the first time where my doctor is wanting me to get exercise with a manual wheelchair and a hand bike attachment to the manual wheelchair.
Unfortunately, since my insurance has paid for my power wheelchair it will not also pay for the manual wheelchair. I have worked very hard over the past year to lose weight, and I have actually lost 80lbs. But I am now stuck and need additional ways to exercise and get stronger. I am asking my friends, family, and community to please help me raise the money needed for the medical equipment that I need in order to continue my personal growth.
